DoubleLucky looks impressive, at least on their website. However one thing the website does not include is opening hours. When HelenKitty and I arrived as the vanguard for the Barchivist meeting on Thursday 22 September we couldn’t get in.
HelenKitty and I had had a dream ride into Leederville through the evening peak hour traffic and our luck continued with the discovery of a convenient parking spot. And that was our double luck all done. Because DoubleLucky was closed. There are no opening hours on their door either.
So, turned away, we looked elsewhere. A few metres down is Niche bar. This venue does have opening hours on their door but Thursday is not amongst them. Double Unlucky!
Just around the corner we came across Cranked. Having passed this venue in the daytime I thought it was only a cafe but in the second half of the week it stays open late and leads a double life as a small bar. They were open. What’s more, they have a large outdoor seating area where HelenKitty and I could keep an eye out for other Barchivists who would be heading towards our intended venue. Double Lucky indeed.
So one sudden change of plan later HelenKitty and I had ordered a pizza for two. Luck was indeed on our side as the menu here included the famous Matso’s Ginger Beer all the way from Broome. And also TF was sighted in the nearby carpark. We called her over and called our waitress back.
Soon after I found MS and PaisleyRedd knocking at the door of DoubleLucky and brought them over to Cranked. Our gathering was complete. Once again we called our waitress back and increased our orders. We had meals all round along with our drinks.
This happened to be one of the first warm evenings in Perth for some time. It was delightful sitting outside eating and drinking. Our waitress came back again, this time to light candles for us.
So we ate, we drank and swapped stories about weddings and bridesmaids (TF had just been a bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding). However we never swapped phone numbers. We really should in case another venue falls through and we need to get in touch with each other.
To sum up Cranked was great; good food with not too long a waiting time. The staff were helpful all throughout and our waitress did well to memorise all of the specials of the day which she repeated to us every time we called her over.
Here is what some of the other Barchivists have to say:
HelenKitty: I thought it was ‘double lucky’ that we ended up at Cranked. It was nice to have a sit down meal and a drink with the fellow Barchivists. Arotulon and I shared a small pizza and some chips. Pretty good fare, and I also enjoyed my Matso’s Ginger Beer.
TF: I still have onion breath from the hardcore onion rings. And the ambiance was fantabulous.
PaisleyRedd: We discovered that Leederville is not really ‘the place to be’ early on a Thursday evening, but at least parking was easy! Cranked was OK – the chips were deliciously crunchy, service was prompt and the waitress was very sweet. Menu substitutions were permitted which I appreciated!
