Now this is a Barchivist digression with a difference; it actually involves a small wine bar, namely The Bird.
The Bird is a small wine bar in Northbridge with the distinction of being a live music venue. I have been meaning to take the Barchivists there for a while but what night to go to see which band? This difficulty was finally solved when the band that features two Barchivists as members staged a rare live appearance at this venue.
Tokyo Five have been around for some years but they have not played live since 2005. It took the intervention of Melbourne based band Falloe to bring Tokyo Five back to the stage again. When Falloe arranged to play a set at The Bird they arranged for Tokyo Five to be one of the support acts.
LP and I went along to The Bird on Easter Sunday 8 April for the show.
The Bird is small but inviting. The venue is long with a few booths and standing room about the stage. There is also a lovely outside area out the back but be mindful of the smokers who frequent this area.
The drinks are reasonable and there is a wide selection. There is not too much food on offer but there are olives, which is a Barchivist staple. The good news is that for those wanting something more substantial than just music as the food of life, it is quite easy to sneak in burgers, chips and even onion rings, from Jus Burgers, who are a few doors down the road. This practice might even by encouraged by the management, I’m not sure.
Tokyo Five is a four piece and Barchivists MS and DJKD comprise half the membership. Their set included a number of new songs which hopefully will see the light of day on an album sometime soon. It was certainly fantastic to finally have them perform live.
The small size of The Bird enhances the experience for the musicians who perform there as 50 people gathered in this venue looks like 100 from the stage, according to DJKD.
The Bird is a great live music venue with an intimate feel and a cool vibe.
For those of you who missed this ultra rare live performance of Tokyo Five below is a taste of what you missed. Until next time…
