How is it that the Barchivists are so close to Subiaco but have never been there for an outing? On Wednesday 27 June we changed that by heading into nearby Subiaco to visit Juanitas. This is a little wine bar at the back of the shop Gill & Hille Merchants.
I got there early, before 5 in fact, to grab a table, a big table, because we had quite a gathering coming. There was DJKD who could only stop for a little while; HelenJess who would soon be leaving us for a new job (but of course she’ll always be welcome to come drink with us), World Inverted, AH, KM, plus making her first re-appearance since going on maternity leave Paisely Red, and also new member Agent 78.
Being Barchivists we of course got olives but since there were so many of us we indulged and got a large platter of all sorts of goodies including oysters, cheese, chorizo, bread and more, all of it tasty.
Juanitas gets crowded easily but the serving staff are friendly and knowledgeable and we had a great time, as documented by nearly everyone. I think that this has been the most photographed of any Barchivist event. When did everyone else get cameras?
Let’s hear what some of the others have to say.
World_Inverted: I really liked Juanitas, it was intimate and small and quite hidden – a place you need to know it is there in order to find it. And the bar person recommended a great shiraz – would really like to go back.
DJKD: I love that it’s hidden away and filled with laminex furniture. Wish I could have stayed longer…. but I’m glad I didn’t have another glass of the fine pinot before heading home, as the rather generous pouring did leave me with a fairly healthy buzz!
Agent 78: It was a fun evening, and a great way to meet some more new faces.
Helenjess: A wonderful, cosy little bar. The bartenders were lovely and happy to give drink suggestions. Having to wind you way through a shop of curios to get to the bar added to its charm. It was also lovely to see PaisleyRed again.
